The chapter-book-age child celebrates reading with every book, eagerly identifying with characters and situations. Like these newly-fluent readers, Nico, BLUEBERRY BONANZA’s main character, is also developing strengths and key skills: setting goals, overcoming challenges, building friendships, and accomplishing something “grown-up” and important.

Nico is a blueberry guy. He loves helping his parents take care of the blueberry bushes in their yard. He’s even found ways to keep a bear out of their orchard and to get neighbors and classmates to join in harvesting the fruit. His big hope is to earn money to donate to the Community Center, and he creates a plan to make that happen. Nico is a boy to cheer for, and your young readers surely will!

Overview

How did that happen?

Nico is a blueberry guy. No doubt about it. He’s been taking care of his family’s backyard blueberry patch since he was a little kid. And this summer, it’s more important than ever.

Nico’s got big plans for their bumper crop. But first he’ll have to save the fruit from the bear who seems to love nothing better than blueberries. Then he’ll have to get some help for the harvest—a lot of help. Last, he’s going to need to sell all those blueberries!

Good thing he’s got plenty of ideas and friends and plain old grit.

Author Information

Lauren L. Wohl has had a long career in children’s book publishing. She has a degree in Library Science and has been an elementary school librarian. She served as Director of James Patterson’s ReadKiddoRead program, taught writing at the college level, and now consults with several publishers and literary agencies. Consulting leaves her time to write, and that’s her favorite thing to do. Her most recent book is A TEENY TINY HALLOWEEN illustrated by Henry Cole. A native New Yorker, Lauren enjoys life in her new hometowns of Lenox, Massachusetts and Miami Beach, Florida.

By day, Mark Tuchman is the creative director for School Library Journal. At home, he is dad to three very creative children who direct him as he works on illustration projects. Before his magazine career, Mark worked full-time creating cartoon-style illustrations. When he was a kid he made comics including a daily strip that appeared on the blackboard of his 7th grade science classroom! Blue (as in “blueberries”) is Mark’s favorite color and the color of his eyes. Mark and his family live in Brooklyn, New York.

REVIEWS

“This is a gentle, pleasant read with cute line illustrations by Tuchman.”

— School Library Journal

“Flavored tale with a built-in community-service message that may encourage youthful entrepreneurial efforts—or at least kindness to bears.”

— Kirkus

“Simple, yet very satisfying…I  especially appreciate the way she weaved Robert McCloskey’s book Blueberries for Sal into the text. Black & white illustrations by Mark Tuchman add to the lightness of the story and help extend it. Never cloying or saccharine, fans of Dory Fantasmagory and the Judy Moody/Stink series will enjoy this beginning chapter book.”

— Goodreads

“It’s a light, quick-moving story…Nico’s entrepreneurial, community-minded spirit shines through, and looks to be a factor in the next planned book, as well. Ages 7–10.”

— Publisher’s Weekly
